Japanther at Caroline Collective

This Sunday at 4pm, Caroline Collective will be hosting a concert and craft fair benefiting Workshop Houston. Brooklyn-based punk band Japanther will be headlining the show, and you can expect to hear music from great local acts as well, including The American Sharks, The Mathletes, Fat Tony, and GRRRL PARTS.

Japanther:

Japanther‚Äôs music is, all at the same time, poignant, intense, danceable and fun. It‚Äôs a happy combination of Noise-Rock, Pop Punk and Indie. While they often refer to themselves as “more of an art project than a band” Japanther gets points for making some of the most memorable, hummable and fun music of any art project in recent memory. Japanther is part Screamers intensity, part Misfits anthemery, part RZA samples/beats and part Lightning Bolt art/freakshow.

The American Sharks:

A lot of bands use crazy onstage antics and energy to mask the fact that, though their music is good, it ’s pretty mediocre. You see it all the time and these days it’s pretty commonplace and, well, annoying. Anyone can stand on a table, jump on their fans and climb the rafters, but not everyone can set concert chaos to a kick-ass soundtrack. The American Sharks can. The group matches an early rock and roll style with the attitude of post-punks like The Germs and the energy of, well, every band ever. РDusti Rhodes, Houston Press

The Mathletes:

The Mathletes isn’t like any other band you know. It’s a lo-fi, indie-pop spectacle‚Ķ (Joe Mathlete) is one of Houston’s most creative musicians. – Sara Cress, Houston Chronicle

Fat Tony:

Intelligent rhymes and a keen sense of worldliness show musical maturity light years beyond those who only listen to radio rap. His rhyme schemes have confidence, but never come across as cocky and overcompensating for lack of substance. There is something fresh and organic in his music and his approach/mantra of “loving life.” – Mike Damante, The Daily Cougar

GRRRL Parts:

GRRRL PARTS is a DJ duo, whose styles range from Electro to Indie to 80s to House, and more. They will be spinning between sets throughout the show.

In addition to these great acts, there will be craft tables set up around the courtyard, including one by Shannon Boyd, one of Caroline Collective’s south building tenants.
