2009 Initiatives

Monthly events:

Craft Night
Craft Night was, in its inception, an after work hours event to come and share your craft project with other crafty people in Houston. Later, it evolved into crafters teaching a specific skill or a non-profit visiting Caroline, providing food and drink and enlisting the help of the community for one of their own projects.
In 2009 Craft Night will continue to provide crafty manpower to non-profits/orgs but will additionally expand to teaching creative skills while making items and goods which benefit service based organizations, creating such usable items such as clothing or household goods. As an effort to give back to our members, several of the craft nights for ’09 will relate to healthy living or making functional objects.

Finally, we plan to begin to logging volunteer hours at Craft Night and other service based Caroline events for submission to local and national service based awards.

Craft Nights will be held near the end of the workday though Happy Hour time the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month beginning on January 20th, 2009. To be considered for a Craft Night in 2009, please contact us at carolinecollective@gmail.com.

Business Classes
To meet one of our goals of helping members and the community succeed in business we will be holding monthly business classes instructing such skills as time management, financial management, writing a business plan, business ethics, and effective presentations to name a few.

Business classes will be held the last Wedneday of each month, attendance will be limited and Caroline members have priority attendance.  Please feel free to suggest business needs that may be addressed by short, informal classes.

Save the Cube People
As part of our outreach program, we will be bringing in a new business to work in the coworking space every week. The goal is to introduce new businesses to the concept of coworking, a horizontal hierarchy and working at Caroline. We hope these visits are as productive for the businesses who visit as for our members in making new connections and building business relationships. We will be conducting surveys and video interviews with each of these groups/orgs/businesses to generate case studies for Caroline and coworking and to showcase local Houston businesses.

Save The Cube People will occur weekly beginning the last week of January. If your business would like to be included in this program or if you have businesses to recommend, please contact us at carolinecollective@gmail.com.

Happy Hour
We plan to have at least one happy hour per month, sponsored by Caroline Collective for members and invited groups. These may be in conjunction with our Show and Tell events or as a separate event.  If your group would like to be included or featured in our happy hours, please contact us at carolinecollective@gmail.com.

Show and Tell
The fall’s Show and Tell lunch meetings were a way to stimulate discussion between Caroline members regarding current projects and needs. We will be opening up these Show and Tell sessions to the community as well to share resources, current projects and needs so that we can collectively approach each others problems and connect people who have desired skills.

Show and Tells will be the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month either at the lunch hour or at Happy Hour time.

Additional Upcoming Events or Initiatives:

  • Regular Tech Salons to keep current with newest trends and best practices
  • Private events and offers to give back to Caroline members
  • Planned Parenthood Salon
  • Volunteer logging and submission to regional and national awards
  • Community Bicycle initiative
  • pre-SXSW Happy Hour with Houston SXSW attendees to share goals and platforms
  • Ignite Houston
  • Mentoring sessions at Caroline

Great to see these initiatives in writing for the entire community to see. Sounds like CC year 2 is going to be rocking as much as year 1. Keep up the awesome community building Matt & Ned!

Thanks Ed, these initiatives are the product of some considerable planning and we’re really proud of them. You’ve been a huge supporter of Caroline this past year and we’d like to make sure you know that. Looking forward to a great year.
